GCP – MongoDB and Google Partner To Drive Enterprise Cloud Modernization

Just two years ago at Next ‘19, Thomas Kurian shared our philosophy for an Open Cloud strategy to provide a best-in-class, seamless experience for our customers. We embarked on this incredible growth journey by bringing MongoDB Atlas, the popular general purpose database platform, closer to customers by launching Atlas on the Google Cloud Marketplace. Since then our partnership has seen a rapid adoption and acceleration across industries such as gaming, retail, healthcare, financial services and automotive.

The collaboration between Google Cloud and MongoDB organizations is showcased through the success of our joint customers, like Forbes and Woolworths, using MongoDB Atlas on Google Cloud- leading to a 300% YoY increase in customer wins. We’re also seeing more and more customers choosing MongoDB Atlas as a suitable alternative to legacy relational databases. Together, we partnered with customers looking to digitize and grow their businesses (e.g. Forbes), or meet increased demand due to COVID (e.g. we partnered with Boxed (online grocery shopping) to scale up their infrastructure and data processing within a very short timeframe) 

As a fully-managed service within the Google Cloud Marketplace, MongoDB Atlas has enabled joint customers to quickly deploy applications on Google Cloud with a unified user experience and an integrated billing model—offering a true “pay as you go” service to take advantage of using Google Cloud credits and pre-existing annualized commitments for Atlas consumption. The Covid pandemic made it challenging for customers to make year long or multi year commitments when procuring software licenses. So we launched pay-as-you-go billing through the Google Cloud Marketplace to make it easier for customers who want the benefits of procuring services from the Marketplace, with the added flexibility of paying on-demand. This functionality is enabled through private offers issued by MongoDB on our Marketplace.

Additionally, as organizations across the globe are assessing how to leave their on-prem data centers and modernize their infrastructure by moving to the public cloud, we have made it easier for customers and partners to migrate legacy workloads into MongoDB Atlas on Google Cloud. MongoDB has partnered with a number of global systems integrators to develop a Modernization Toolkit that customers can use to quickly evaluate MongoDB’s product fit for their portfolio of legacy applications.

Google Cloud is a leader in the open-source community. We have enabled customers to consume MongoDB Atlas along with other Google Cloud services (e.g. BigQuery, Pub/Sub, etc.) to modernize their database stack when they migrate their infrastructure to the cloud, and take advantage of state-of-the-art analytics and machine learning capabilities of Google Cloud. Whether it is an industry-specific use case or a strategic technology initiative like Mainframe Modernization, these solutions are proven to help customers significantly boost developer productivity and reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). We have also worked with MongoDB to integrate our core capabilities in security, AI, ML, for monitoring and logging, to provide customers with additional value running Atlas on Google Cloud.

Below are a few examples of our global partnership:

• Woolworths Group:one of the largest retailers in Australia and New Zealand, decided to start offering digital receipts in order to minimize human contact during COVID-19. The retailer used MongoDB Atlas, to create a new platform to ingest all of its point of sale data and serve it out to customers in real-time. MongoDB was able to help them get the system up and running in under three weeks.
• Forbes:The 100-year-old publisher known for its business journalism and rich lists migrated its CMS from its on-prem data center to MongoDB Atlas on Google Cloud. Google Cloud’s Kubernetes Engine made it more manageable to orchestrate Forbes’ horde of more than 50 microservices. The cloud infrastructure has helped the website scale to more than 140 million monthly users while allowing its development team to accelerate their release cycles 4x and reduce total cost of ownership by 25%.
• Adeo: France’s leading DIY Retailer, migrated from Oracle to MongoDB Atlas in an effort to modernize their product catalog while accelerating developer productivity. Previously, updating versions of their legacy database took three to four months for a team of 25 developers, according to Emmanuel Dieva, software engineer at Adeo. By using MongoDB Atlas on Google Cloud, the organization was able to perform software upgrades in minutes and with zero downtime. Adeo’s developer teams now can focus on new innovations rather than managing their database clusters.
• Current:leading U.S. challenger bank, built its next-generation mobile bank called Current Core using Atlas on Google Cloud. “Atlas has enabled Current to reduce TCO by giving it the power to pushbutton-scale its platform as needed to meet changing demand with zero ops intervention,” said Current CTO, Trevor Marshall. Current has doubled its member base in less than six months to surpass two million members and increased its revenue more than 500 percent year over year.
